Missouri first responders get ready for smallpox vaccines
Emergency Management Alert, April 19, 2004
Missouri health officials are asking police, firefighters, and paramedics to get the smallpox vaccination, according to the Kansas City Star.
The state wants to vaccinate first responders to prepare for a potential smallpox outbreak. Nationwide, only about 39,000 doctors, nurses, and public-health workers received the vaccination, as part of a federal drive to create smallpox response teams in every state that could quickly set up emergency vaccination clinics.
Although smallpox has been eliminated worldwide as an infectious disease, terrorism experts are still concerned about its potential as a biological weapon.
Last year federal officials hoped to vaccinate 500,000 health workers nationwide, but the program failed due to concerns about the vaccine's side effects and associated liability. So far, about 1,300 people in Missouri received the vaccination, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
About 48,000 people in Missouri hold jobs as first responders, but the state has not determined any vaccination quotas, says Brian Quinn, spokesman for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
