A group of New Hampshire obstetricians and gynecologists urged state lawmakers Monday to control medical malpractice insurances costs. Without the controls, they claim they may have to stop practicing medicine.

Physicians signed a letter encouraging patients to contact lawmakers in support of medical malpractice reform. House Bill No. 1413 would establish a screening panel to review malpractice claims before they go to court. While some physicians don't believe the bill will reduce insurance costs, they hope it will help control them.

One New Hampshire gynecologist said she paid an $8,000 insurance premium in 2000. That jumped to $19,700 in 2003, but dropped to $6,000 a year when she stopped performing major procedures.
