The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on March 19 released criteria for patient referrals to specialty hospitals under the new Medicare reform law.

CMS will implement a moratorium on physician investment in and referrals to certain specialty hospitals, the agency said in a press release. Physicians may not refer patients to a specialty hospital in which they have ownership or investment interests, CMS said.

Medicare contractors will receive the criteria in a transmittal from CMS. The criteria include the types of services specialty hospitals provide, a list of hospitals not covered under the law, and how to determine if a hospital is exempt from the specialty hospital provision.
