First-responder task forces requires patience, commitment to building relationships
Emergency Management Alert, March 23, 2004
Since hospitals officially joined the ranks of first responders-thanks to a December 17, 2003, presidential directive-they may be working on task forces with traditional first responders such as firefighters, police, and emergency medical services (EMS).
For many hospitals that have been involved in emergency response task forces for years, this is nothing new. "Since 9/11, hospitals have reached out to these community partners, and some relationships are already established," says Roslyne Schulman, senior associate director for policy development at the American Hospital Association in Chicago. "You want hospital emergency preparedness staff to be on a first name basis with other first responders. An emergency is not the time to get to know these people."
