New Jersey hospitals may have to report serious medical errors to the state under a bill that passed the state Assembly on Tuesday.

The Patient Safety Act, which passed 78-0, requires hospitals to take internal measures to prevent the errors from happening again. Error reports filed to the state would not become public and would not be admissible in malpractice lawsuits.

The bill passed the state Senate 39-0 last month. The Senate will take another look at the bill to consider amendments from the Assembly Health and Human Services Committee.
