NYC conducts largest emergency response test
Emergency Management Alert, March 15, 2004
On Sunday, more than 1,000 police, firefighters, and other emergency workers participated in a simulated weapons of mass destruction attack on New York's Shea Stadium, Reuters reports. The drill, dubbed Operation United Response, is the largest in the city's history.
The test will evaluate the city's emergency response system, says Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The four-hour test simulated an explosion and attack at the stadium and involved police, fire, and medical personnel, many clad in protective clothing. Officials did not specify what kind of weapon was used, Reuters reports.
More than 1,000 volunteers participated as victims or evacuees.
"Operation United Response gives us an opportunity to evaluate emergency management procedures, the use of newly-issued anti-terrorism equipment and how responders deal with a major terrorist threat while minimizing risks to themselves and others," the mayor says.
