Health systems not ready for disease, bioterrism threats

A leading expert on infectious diseases and bioterrorism painted a bleak picture of the healthcare system's preparedness for both natural and man-made health threats during a JCAHO-sponsored conference in November.

The United States has a long way to go before it can consider itself prepared for a variety of imminent public health disasters, Michael Osterholm, PhD, MPH, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, said during a speech for the Joint Commission National Conference on Infection Control in Chicago.

"We are grossly unprepared to deal with many crises in society," Osterholm said. "It all boils down to systems."
