DHS adopts new performance standards to detect radiological and nuclear material

Emergency Management Alert, March 12, 2004

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has adopted performance standards for equipment to detect radiological and nuclear material. This move will help federal, state, and local officials, and first responders quickly deploy the best technology to protect the nation from such threats.

The standards apply to four classes of radiation detection equipment ranging from hand-held alarming detectors to radiation portal monitors for cargo containers. Officials receiving DHS grants through the Office of Domestic Preparedness will use the standards as technical guidance on performance specifications for detectors. DHS will receive the standards The standards as detection technology evolves. DHS developed the standards in partnership with the Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Energy Department's National Laboratories, and the private sector.
