Government makes effort to enchance biosecurity in research
Emergency Management Alert, March 12, 2004
The government is increasing biosecurity to prevent biological research from being used by terrorists.
Last week Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced the creation of the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity. The board will advise all federal departments and agencies that conduct or support life sciences research that falls specifically into the "dual use" category. Dual use is the development of tools that can have two purposes. For example, genetic manipulations of organisms that could result in:
- New pathogens
- Increased pathogenicity
- Resistance to antibiotics
- Altered host range of a pathogen
- Increased transmissibility of an infectious agent
- Invisibility to diagnosis or detection
The board will also advise Thompson, the director of the National Institute of Health, and leaders in federal departments and agenies that conduct or support life sciences research.
