The union representing nearly 300 nurses at Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler, PA, has opposed the hospital's plan to build an ambulatory surgery center in partnership with some of its physicians, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Pennsylvania Independent Nurses union worries that the center could perform some of the more profitable services normally done at Butler Memorial, taking money away from the hospital. The union is also concerned that the center will endanger patient safety if it is not built near the hospital and an emergency occurs during a procedure.

Hospital administrators would like the center and a new, modernized hospital built on the same site, but they cannot guarantee that will happen, according to the Post-Gazette.
