The Tennessee state House of Representatives on March 1 approved a bill that would require nursing homes to tell all prospective residents if the homes do not have full sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, and smoke alarms, the Associated Press reports.

The bill is one of several filed in response to two fatal fires at nursing homes within the last five months, one in Nashville and one in Maryville.

The bill's provisions would extend to assisted living centers and residential homes for the aged in addition to nursing homes. It would require a separate disclosure of the home's fire safety equipment, to be signed and witnessed at the time a contract for residency was finalized.

The provisions would apply to 87 nursing homes in the state, said Rep. Janis Sontany, D-Nashville, who sponsored the bill. The bill now goes to the full Senate. Two other bills requiring the installation of full sprinkler systems are under consideration in the Legislature.
