Hospital's play a new role as first responders

Emergency Management Alert, March 2, 2004

Safety and emergency planning consultant Joseph Cocciardi, CIH, CSP, REHS, RS, PhD, discussed how the new role hospitals will play as first responders may change their interaction with traditional emergency medical services (EMS) and other first responders. Cocciardi also talks about how hospitals and healthcare agencies can help return their facilities to normal operations after a hazardous substance/terrorist incident.

Cocciardi has more than 20 years' experience. He instructs various state training agencies and field programs for the National Fire Academy/National Emergency Training Center in terrorism and hazardous materials response. Cocciardi has authored a number of books about emergency response and is currently developing the "Emergency Response Team Manual," to be published by the National Fire Protection Association this year.
