Postal service seeks anti-terrorism funding

Emergency Management Alert, March 2, 2004

Postmaster General John Potter asked Congress for anti-terrorism funding from the Bush administration last week, which failed to include the agency in its budget next year, the Associated Press reports.

With $779 million, the agency could buy and install biological agent and poison detection systems, and new ventilation and filtration systems for 282 mail centers across the country, Potter says.

Although anthrax and recently, ricin, got delivered through the mail, Bush's budget doesn't include any funding for the agency's protection.
Two postal workers died from anthrax in 2001.

Without federal help, the agency will have to increase the postal rate because it's already pursuing the new detection and filtration systems, and signed over a $300 million contract request for the money, Potter says.
