Police in Winston-Salem, NC, are investigating the February 13 death of a 90-year-old woman who was assaulted in January at the assisted-living center where she lived, the Associated Press reports.
Katherine Cromer Bovender died after being moved to a different center. The assault on Bovender occurred January 16 or 17 at the Martin House of Winston-Salem, police said. Police are investigating the assault as an elder-abuse case, and will seek to determine if her death was connected to the assault.
Authorities asked the Forsyth County Department of Social Services to investigate the Martin House. An employee of the home told police that Bovender had been taken to Forsyth Medical Center after the assault in January. The woman had bruises on her extremities, shoulders, face, and the back of her head, police said.
Bovender had Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and other medical problems, and was not able to say what happened to her. She was discharged from the hospital later in the day on January 17 and returned to the Martin House.
Bovender's son told the AP that he visited his mother in January and she seemed disturbed. Worried about her safety, he asked that she be checked again at Forsyth Medical Center. After several days there, Bovender's son moved her to the Brian Center in Winston-Salem, where she later died.
