U.K. scientists testing Black Death vaccine

Emergency Management Alert, February 24, 2004

A team of scientists in the United Kingdom may have found a vaccine against the Black Death last week.

Black Death, also known as the Bubonic Plague, killed millions of people in the Middle Ages and is still endemic in some parts of the world, including the United States. Today, concerns exist of Black Death being used as a biological weapon during a terrorist attack.

While there is an existing vaccine in Australia, reports says it's not effective. An American version, based on the same principle as Australia's, was abandoned in 1999, the Times online reports.

The U.K. Ministry of Defense laboratories say the vaccine may be available within a year after going through tests. Initial tests on humans show no side effects, the Times reports.
