DHS launches Protected Critical Infrastructure Information Program

Emergency Management Alert, February 24, 2004

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched the Protected Critical Infrastructure Information Program last week to help reduce the nation's vulnerability to terrorist attacks.

The new program allows the private sector to voluntarily submit infrastructure information to the federal government, a DHS news release says. Critical infrastructure includes the assets and system that, if disrupted, would threaten national security, public health and safety, the economy, and the country's way of life. DHS estimates that more than 85% of the industries, services, and systems fall within the private sector, the news release reports.

The program will focus on analyzing and securing critical infrastructure and protected systems, risk and vulnerabilities assessments, and assisting with recovery as appropriate under the Critical Infrastructure Information Act of 2002.
