Several city and state agencies began investigations last week into the death of a Queens, NY, nursing home resident who froze to death on the facility's roof, the New York Daily News reports.
Lillie Gardner, 79, was found dead on the roof of the Bishop Charles Waldo MacLean Nursing Home in Far Rockaway. Investigators hope to determine how the Alzheimer's patient made it up to the roof and remained there undetected for more than five hours.
Gardner was last seen at about 5:30 p.m. on February 3, and a staff nurse noticed she was missing during an evening check at around 9:30 p.m. She was found on the roof just after midnight and taken to the adjoining St. John's Episcopal Hospital.
An attorney said the family is considering filing a wrongful death lawsuit. The city medical examiner's office was conducting an autopsy to determine Gardner's official cause of death. Police said there were no signs of trauma or sexual abuse.
