A three-week investigation by Capital Health in Edmonton, Alberta, found that a 90-year-old woman received fatal burns while being bathed in her long-term care facility, the Canadian Press reports.
Capital Health said its Jubilee Lodge Nursing Home will replace the tub it used to bathe Jennie Nelson with a new model that includes an automatic water regulator that moderates the temperature. Staff will receive orientation on safe bathing procedures and a nurse specialist will remain assigned to the facility for the time being.
Nelson, an Alzheimer's patient, died in January in a hospital burn unit, about a week after receiving her injuries. Authorities said she died as a result of second-degree burns to her legs, and that heart and lung problems were complicating factors.
Alberta's Community Development department also began an investigation into the death.
Capital Health contracts continuing care services to Jubilee Lodge as well as several other long-term care facilities.
