NYC health department seeks volunteers to give emergency vaccinations

Emergency Management Alert, February 4, 2004

The New York City Department of Health is seeking physicians and nurses to volunteer in a new medical reserve corps, which will help provide quick vaccinations to city residents in case of a biological attack, the New York Post reports.

About 2,000 people have joined the corps since the January 9 request for volunteers, but Department of Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden said the corps needs more. The department needs physicians, nurses, dentists, veterinarians, pharmacists, emergency medical technicians, and medical professionals.

Federal funds pay for the corps' activities, including participating in a smallpox response plan. In the event of an attack, volunteers would go to clinics throughout the city to administer vaccines. The plan doesn't pay volunteers for their work, but it covers them for medical malpractice.
