The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) cited New Britain General Hospital for 41 workplace safety and health violations that could total $91,500, the Hartford Courant reports.

OSHA began inspecting New Britain General in September after workplace data provided by the hospital rose above the agency's standard. Inspectors found work environments that had potential health and safety risks; the violations did not involve patient care or patient safety.

The inspection turned up 20 safety citations for violations including hazards in compressed gas storage, confined spaces, energy control, and electrical infractions. The violations carry up to $42,000 in fines.

OSHA's health inspection found 17 serious violations that could carry a fine of up to $49,500, including hazards associated with bloodborne pathogens, respiratory protection requirements, eye-wash stations, formaldehyde exposures, and chemical hygiene.

The inspectors also found four less serious violations for minor electrical problems and improper labeling of hazardous chemicals.

The hospital has already corrected some of the problems, but it plans to meet with OSHA officials to discuss some of the other violations. New Britain General received the report January 19 and has 15 business days to either agree to comply with the citations, request an informal conference with OSHA, or contest the findings. Laurence Tanner, president and CEO of the hospital, said the hospital would choose the conference.
