U.S. raises threat level to high
Emergency Management Alert, December 26, 2003
Citing the increased risk of terrorist attacks, the Department of Homeland Security on December 21 raised the nation's terror alert warning to Code Orange, or "high" status.
Airports stepped up security measures during the height of the holiday travel season amid intelligence information that said the Al Qaeda terrorist network planned to use planes as weapons, as terrorists did on September 11, 2001. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said the new threat is the most significant since the September 11 attacks.
The government urged citizens to plan for such events using suggestions provided at http://www.ready.gov
