Chinese health officials said December 17 that a medical researcher in Taiwan tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the first case in China since the deadly virus killed hundreds in the region earlier this year, Reuters reports.
The man possibly contracted SARS two weeks ago in a laboratory in the Taipei military hospital where he worked, officials said. The first symptoms appeared after he returned home from a seminar in Singapore. There are no signs of other SARS cases in Singapore.
The World Health Organization said the incident appears to be an isolated case, similar to a case in September when a researcher in Singapore contracted the illness while studying the SARS virus in a government-run lab. He recovered.
The 44-year-old Taiwanese patient traveled to Singapore between December 7 and 10. He had an accident in his lab on December 5 that officials believe exposed him to the virus. Officials say he is stable and having no difficulty breathing.
