Quebec's health minister on December 9 took control of a long-term care facility in Montreal after a report found that patients suffered frequent physical and verbal abuse, Canadian Press reports.
The sisters of a 51-year-old patient at St-Charles Borromee Hospital released tape recordings two weeks ago of staff verbally abusing her. The Quebec government investigated the allegations and found several similar cases, said Health Minister Philippe Couillard.
The original allegations set off a whirlwind of controversy that resulted in the apparent suicide of Leon Lafleur, the hospital's director, who was criticized for initially downplaying the claims.
The facility suspended two employees for two days after the allegations became public, but the government report found the suspensions were not enough. Couillard appointed an interim director to make changes to training, management practices, and the complaint process.
A lawyer representing 325 patients recently filed a class-action lawsuit against the hospital on their behalf, alleging mistreatment.
