Anti-abortion activist convicted in anthrax hoax case

Emergency Management Alert, December 10, 2003

A federal jury convicted a self-described "terrorist" of mailing fake anthrax to women's clinics to try and shut them down, the Associated Press reports.

Clayton Waagner was found guilty on 51 of 53 counts, including the most serious charge, threatening to use a weapon of mass destruction. Already serving a 49-year jail term for car theft and weapons charges, Waagner was once on the FBI's "10 Most Wanted List."

The jury reached the verdict on December 3 after less than four hours of deliberation. Waagner represented himself during the 2 ½ week trial. He denied sending the letters, but told the jury he believed abortion providers should be shot.

Authorities said evidence found in the stolen car he was driving included copies of the death threats, the addresses of the targeted clinics, and a detailed log that included entries such as "mailed anthrax" and "faxed FBI bomb threat."
