CT builds biosafety lab to test viruses

Emergency Management Alert, November 4, 2003

A high-security laboratory under construction at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station will be able to test viruses on a federal list as potential bioterror weapons, the Connecticut Post reports.

The $8.6 million biosafety lab will be able to test brucella, tularemia, Q-fever, and smallpox. It will also perform extensive tests for eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still must approve the lab before it can open.
