The Pocasset Lodge Assisted Living facility, the site of a November 2002 fire that forced the evacuation of approximately 180 residents, was fined $4,000 for housing residents that required a much higher level of care, the Associated Press reports.
Seventeen residents at the time of the fire were not capable of self-preservation in an emergency situation, according to a state health department report. Last month, the department found another six residents at Pocasset that should have been in more appropriate facilities, according to television station WPRI. Pocasset Lodge was ordered to remove those patients.
In addition to the fine, the facility was placed on one years probation and ordered to submit a plan that will outline a way to identify future residents that may require a higher level of care and ensure the problem doesn't occur again.
A discarded cigarette caused the fire. There were no injuries reported among residents of two buildings, but a firefighter broke both legs and ankles when he slipped on a ladder.
