Emergency aid program helps states hit by hurricane

Emergency Management Alert, September 28, 2003

In the wake of Hurricane Isabel's destructive path through the East Coast, a mutual aid pact helped bring resources to many afflicted areas. The Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) provides for the seamless and unencumbered exchange of resources between member states. Previously, it was used to help after the World Trade Center attacks and the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy. States across the country responded to requests from the affected areas, which include North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Washington, DC. Kentucky, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, New Mexico, South Carolina, Washington, Idaho, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Massachusetts provided personnel and equipment to the states in need. The services provided include conducting damage assessments, sending backup staff support to state and local emergency operations centers, assisting victims in obtaining aid, and helping with the flow of information to the public and media.
