HHS awards $26 million for bioterrorism training and education

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on September 12 announced more than $26 million in grants to strengthen bioterrorism training and education for the nation's health care workers.
The program includes two components: $22.3 million for continuing education for health professionals and $4.2 million for curriculum development in health professions schools. The program will provide for training of at least 38,000 health professionals in emergency response.
This program is part of the federal government's $4.4 billion fiscal 2003 investment in bioterrorism preparedness. The University of Texas Health Sciences Center received the most continuing education funding ($1.84 million) and the largest curriculum development grant ($459,222).
