Firm negotiates anthrax vaccine rights in U.K.

Emergency Management Alert, September 10, 2003

Biotechnology company VaxGen saw its share prices surge on September 4 after it announced it was negotiating to sell rights to its experimental anthrax vaccine in the United Kingdom, the Associated Press reports.

No deal is in place, and the vaccine is years away from gaining regulatory approval. The Brisbane, CA-based VaxGen said it is negotiating with the Health Protection Agency for England and Wales.

The vaccine, called rPA102, is being developed by VaxGen under a $16.2 million contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The company began testing the vaccine for safety in 100 volunteers earlier this year.

Several companies are working on new anthrax vaccines to replace the current one, which requires six shots over 18 months and an annual booster. It also causes certain side effects.
