The World Health Organization (WHO) plans to test a new surveillance system in early September for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in the Chinese provinces hit hardest by the illness, the Associated Press reports.
The new system will require medical workers to be more specific in questioning people with SARS-like symptoms and will encourage improved information handling.
The trial will involve between 10 and 14 hospitals in Guangdong, Shanxi, and Beijing, according to a WHO spokesperson. Health officials hope to improve vigilance in case SARS, which subsided in June after its worldwide outbreak, returns in the coming months.
The WHO system will be tested for four weeks, with plans to have it in place around China by the end of October.
