Authorities in Meriden, CT, are investigating an August 9 fire in MidState Medical Center's emergency department that left a woman severely burned, the Hartford Courant reports.

The woman was in critical condition as of August 10 at Bridgeport Hospital's burn unit.

The fire started at about 11 p.m. in a room at MidState's emergency department, but the cause was still unknown, said Lucille Janatka, MidState president and CEO.

Staff members put out the fire with extinguishers. Patients were moved to the hospital's surgical outpatient and recovery centers. The hospital diverted incoming ambulances to Hartford Hospital. Damage from the fire was minor and the emergency department reopened within a few hours.
