Physicians need more education on bioterrorism, report finds

Emergency Management Alert, July 16, 2003

In a new report, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recommends that the nation's medical schools thoroughly educate students about weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and the public health and emergency systems.

The AAMC and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded the study. A group of educators from schools of medicine, nursing, and public health, experts in WMD preparedness and military medicine, and officials from the CDC and AAMC prepared it.

The report identifies new learning objectives for medical school programs to ensure that students gain adequate knowledge of the public health system, emergency management system, physician roles in emergency response, and professional ethics. Students should also learn about the psychological and mental health impact of WMD.
