Officials at St. Louis Children's Hospital are investigating a salmonella outbreak that so far has struck 99 people, according to the Associated Press.

The source of the illness is unknown and the number of cases could rise because tests are still underway, a hospital spokeswoman said June 30. The hospital confirmed the most recent case of the infection June 27.

The hospital closed its cafeteria June 6 after city health officials learned that three hospital employees were sick. Samples were taken from more than 400 people who visited the hospital or ate in the cafeteria since May 1. The cafeteria reopened June 15 after two days of cleaning.

Salmonella can be found in several kinds of foods, but is prevalent in raw meat, eggs, dairy products, and seafood. Health officials blame salmonella for 1,000 deaths annually in about 40,000 cases nationally. The illness causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
