Study finds public health labs unprepared for chemical attack

Emergency Management Alert, June 13, 2003

A public health group found that the U.S. public health system is "woefully unprepared" to deal with a chemical or biological attack, according to Global Security Newswire.

Trust for America's Health released the report June 4 after conducting a state-by-state analysis of public health facilities in which it concluded that laboratories suffered from inadequate staffing, obsolete facilities, and poor communications.

The group called on lawmakers to allocate $200 million annually through fiscal 2006 to upgrade state public health labs and prepare them for a chemical or biological attack. After 2006, Congress should spend $100 million each year, the organization adds.
