Florida emergency physicians send petri dishes to lawmakers

Emergency Management Alert, June 4, 2003

Florida lawmakers concerned about bioterrorism called police May 29 after receiving a political mailing in which emergency room physicians sent petri dishes to protest the high cost of malpractice insurance, Reuters reports.

The Florida College of Emergency Physicians sent a mailing to state legislators' offices that included a toy petri dish and a note asking, "If you received this letter, where would you go?"

Senate President Jim King, a Jacksonville Republican, criticized the move. "It deeply troubles me that some doctors in our state would go as far as sending questionable packages to legislative offices," he said in a statement.

The Florida legislature plans to take up the malpractice issue when lawmakers return this month.
