Postal service delays anthrax detection tests

Emergency Management Alert, June 4, 2003

The U.S. Postal Service postponed a 14-city test of a new anthrax detection system that it planned to begin June 3, the Associated Press reports. The system, which uses rapid DNA testing to identify anthrax, was developed after the anthrax attacks in the fall of 2001. Baltimore tested the system for several months.

The Postal Service delayed the 30-day test because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still working with local authorities in the cities to develop coordinated guidelines for responding to the test results. No new date to begin the tests was announced.

The systems are installed in the 14 cities and are ready for use. The test sites are Dulles, VA; Capitol Heights, MD; Albany, NY; Edison, NJ; Manasota, St. Petersburg, and Tampa, FL; Midland, TX; Los Angeles, Tacoma, WA; Rockford, IL; Lancaster and Pittsburgh, PA; and Cleveland.
