Decorations on a patient room door

Q: I understand the Life Safety Code® (LSC) decoration rule, but in the long-term care facility that I manage, I find many combustible decorations mounted on the corridor doors to the resident rooms. Something about this just doesn’t seem right to me. Your thoughts?

A:
As long as the doors are NOT fire rated, then I do not see any problem with the LSC regarding decorations on the door. They would be permitted. Section 19.7.5.6 of the 2012 LSC says decorations are permitted on non-fire-rated doors as long as they do not interfere with the operation of the door, and they do not cover more than 20% of the wall, door, and ceiling areas of the space, or 30% if the smoke compartment is fully protected with automatic sprinklers. The allowable surface area for decorations jumps to 50% inside a patient sleeping room that does not have a capacity of more than four persons, as long as the smoke compartment is fully protected with automatic sprinklers.

The reason this may not seem right to you is because the LSC used to be more restrictive. Editions prior to the 2012 LSC would not have allowed many decorations to be mounted on a patient room door.
