Despite warnings to the healthcare industry about the dangers that hackers pose to patient safety and the electronic security of hospitals, the problem just seems to get worse.
Ransomware attacks continue to plague the nation’s hospitals, despite calls from computer network experts to beef up security measures.
As of September 2019, at least 621 ransomware attacks were reported on public entities, causing disruptions to businesses, schools, and hospitals, according to network security company Emsisoft. The healthcare industry had 491 attacks, coming in as the third-highest-attacked entities, with about 14% of the attacks directed at hospitals. That number fell behind only professional services and software services.
“The healthcare sector continued to be a popular ransomware target,” according to the Emsisoft report State of Ransomware in the U.S.: 2019 Report for Q1 to Q3.
