The World Health Organization (WHO) on April 14 urged health care facilities around the world to screen all patients with a fever and respiratory symptoms for sudden acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), USA Today reports.

New guidelines on the WHO's Web site recommend that emergency doctors and nurses regard patients with these symptoms as "alert cases" who should be examined, questioned about possible SARS exposure, and isolated if necessary.

The WHO's latest tally of the flu-like illness is 7,548 cases and 573 deaths since SARS emerged in China in November 2002. The U.S. has had 64 probable cases and no deaths.
