Roche plans to make SARS test available in July

Emergency Management Alert, May 14, 2003

Swiss pharmaceuticals group Roche Diagnostics plans to make a test for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) available at cost to laboratories in affected countries by the end of July, the Agence France Press reports.

Roche, working with Asian, German, and Canadian partners, plans to price the first batch at $10 to $15 per test, with results available within an hour at the testing center. The company will submit the test to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and European regulators for approval.

The test uses Roche's patented polymerase chain reaction technique, which analyzes genetic material to detect diseases or disorders. It requires a Roche instrument called the LightCycler System, which the company says is in wide use throughout the world.

The test could mean that authorities will no longer have to quarantine suspected SARS cases for 10 days before determining whether they actually have the disease. Roche used the same technique to develop an anthrax detection test.
