A year of lab safety in review

To get your lab in tip-top shape for the upcoming year, have a look back at the last year’s mistakes

As each year comes to a close, I usually try to figure out my lab safety goals for the next year. What topics need to be covered, and what education needs to be emphasized? There is a great deal of planning, but I never have to start with a blank slate. There is plenty of data to use in order to formulate a sensible safety plan for the new year. An in-depth review of the current closing year is the key.

The first thing to look at is the injury or exposure rates from the current year. Are they higher or lower than last year? Take a look at the specific incidents and look for trends or repeat occurrences. There may be some training opportunities found from a review of this data. If there is a common cause for a specific set of injuries, you may need to create an education module for all lab staff to prevent further events.
