A review of all the regulatory agencies that affect your hospital, from CMS, accreditation agencies such as The Joint Commission, OSHA, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), can show the sheer magnitude of the impact regulations have on the healthcare industry, not to mention that the regulations are constantly changing.
The day-to-day operations in a healthcare organization are significantly impacted and driven by regulations, from medical records to the facility rounds that safety officers make daily. However, we also need to understand the consequences for failing to comply with the regulations. Not being in compliance with these regulations can significantly impact the organization. A healthcare organization that loses CMS funding due to violations can lose tens of thousands of dollars each day in non-reimbursable care provided by the hospital. The hospital can also expect a media firestorm, thus demoralizing staff trying to keep the hospital operating. The physicians practicing at these facilities will also start to lose confidence and trust and may take their services elsewhere.
