Illinois hospital prepares for power emergency

A Rockford, Illinois hospital held a large-scale evacuation drill September 21 to help prepare for the possibility of a major power emergency, according to a report from WIFR-TV.

SwedishAmerican Hospital, along with the town's fire department, practiced the hospital's response plan in the event that the whole facility suffered complete power failure, resulting in no lights, elevators, and more importantly life support, according to the report.

As many as 70 volunteers acted as patients needing to be evacuated, which allowed hospital staff to figure out how to deal with the mass numbers of patients that they would have to deal with in an evacuation scenario, the report said.
