The World Health Organization (WHO) officially confirmed on April 16 that a member of the corona virus family never before seen in humans causes the deadly SARS virus, Reuters reports.

Scientists and the WHO have long believed that the virus, which also causes the common cold, was the source of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome. The official identification means health officials can now focus their attention on finding specific treatments and possibly a vaccination.

In the last six weeks, the flu-like virus has killed about 160 people worldwide and infected about 3,400. The virus first infected people in China and has since spread to 22 countries, including Canada and the U.S., through air travel. The WHO said this week that China health officials failed to report all of its SARS cases, and that there may be five times the official number of cases in Beijing.
