Police told a court that a patient nearly tore off a nurse's ear and attempted to gouge out her eye during an attack March 5 at Pembroke (Massachusetts) Hospital, according to a report from the Patriot Ledger.

According to the report, the patient, 22-year-old Rasheed Avinger, was placed in restraints after assaulting other hospital workers and then assaulted the nurse, who was trying to transfer him into other another restraint system.
Avinger was arraigned Monday in Plymouth District Court on charges of assault with serious bodily injury and mayhem and transferred to Bridgewater State Hospital for a mental evaluation.

According to the report, the March 5 assault is the latest of a string of violent incidents at the 120-bed psychiatric hospital that has led to worker injury and regulator interest. The paper reports that during an OSHA probe of the hospital last May, inspectors noted that the hospital had recorded 13 injuries to workers from aggressive behavior by patients in the first five months of 2015. The previous year, there were 24 injuries of hospital workers due to violent attacks, a 41% increase over the injuries reported in 2013, according to the paper. At that time, OSHA called for improved staffing and safety measures at the hospital, but the hospital has ignored those requests, the paper reported.
