Police charged a 53-year-old woman with attempted kidnapping this week after she allegedly tried to abduct a baby from Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, FL, the Jacksonville Times-Union reports.

Police say Anita Perry posed as a nurse, an admissions clerk, and a hearing-impaired interpreter on March 10 as she approached parents and asked if she could hold their babies.

When one mother allowed Perry to check whether her eight-month-old baby had a fever, Perry immediately walked away with the child. The mother followed, got her child back, and summoned hospital security.

The security guard escorted Perry out of the hospital, but allowed her back in after she said she left some personal belongings behind, police said. Perry then managed to slip away and the hospital called the St. Johns Sheriff's Office 40 minutes later. Police arrested Perry on a bus March 11 after the bus driver alerted them.
