A French hospital in Vietnam shut down this week after an American patient arrived with flu-like symptoms that killed him and infected 26 hospital workers, the Associated Press reports.
The Hanoi French Hospital stopped accepting patients on March 11, and officials diverted emergencies to other medical facilities.
The hospital evacuated the 48-year-old American businessman to a Hong Kong facility where he later died from a severe case of pneumonia. The hospital workers who contracted the illness complained of headaches, muscle aches, sore throats, and fevers, but none have been evacuated.
Preliminary tests found that the respiratory illness was not related to a fatal bird flu that killed a man in Hong Kong last month. The American arrived in Hanoi in late February from his Shanghai home.
It is unknown when the Hanoi hospital will reopen.
