A woman who was being evaluated for mental issues at an Elizabeth City, North Carolina hospital attacked a deputy June 14, stealing her gun and shooting herself in the knee during a struggle, according to a report from WVEC-TV.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, when the patient began fighting with a female deputy, according to the report. Officials quoted in the report said the patient took the deputy’s gun during the struggle and wound up shooting herself in the knee as they fought, and then bit the deputy.

Additional hospital staff and deputies were able to subdue the patient. Both the patient and deputy were treated for their injuries. The incident is under investigation, according to WVEC.
