We don't need to tell you that safety is important. You're the safety guru in your facility, and if you're doing your job right, you're looking for every opportunity you can find to promote safety in the hospital workplace. Still, people are busy, and the message can get lost in the day-to-day shuffle.

The National Safety Council (NSC), an Illinois-based safety advocacy group that promotes safety in homes, workplaces, and communities across the country, has designated the month of June as National Safety Month.

For you, the healthcare safety professional, this means you want yourself and your colleagues to go home safely at the end of the day, to have a healthy career free of injuries, and to be ready to help those in need.

The NSC has dedicated three weeks of June to safety matters that can easily be applied to the healthcare workplace. Specifically, the group is concentrating on several safety subjects, including emergency planning; preventing slips, trips, and falls (one of the most prevalent causes of injuries to workers in the healthcare industry); and ergonomics, which is quickly becoming a silent form of worker injury, as more employees spend time in front of computers and hunched over laboratory microscopes.

In honor of National Safety Month, we thought we'd give you a weekly guide to how you can improve safety in your facility, with some help from our experts.
