Three patients sued a South Dakota surgeon on February 24, alleging that he operated on the wrong parts of their backs, according to the Associated Press (AP).

One of the lawsuits accuses Rapid City Regional Hospital of covering up a wrong-site disc surgery to protect neurosurgeon Steven Schwartz, who works at the hospital, but performed several of the surgeries at his ambulatory clinic. He is also one of the only neurosurgeons in the area who is not associated with an independent ambulatory center that competes with the hospital, according to the AP.

Schwartz denies the allegations and maintains that the dispute is over the amount of damages in the case.
